ASIAN FILM SCHOOLS' PRESENTATION Cambodia Centre Bophana www.bophana.org ____ The Audiovisual Resource Center was founded by Rithy Panh. It has adopted several missions: collection of the images and sounds of the Cambodian memory and making them available to a wide public, training Cambodians in the audiovisual professions by welcoming foreign film productions and by its own artistic projects. All the documents are accessible to the public in the form of a trilingual (French, English Khmer) data base which brings these archives to life. The first pole of our activity consists of protecting the national audiovisual heritage was already initiated in 2005, while the two other poles of our activity are now being set up. Indonesia Faculty of Film & Television, The Jakarta Institute of the Arts (FFTV-IKJ) www.fftvikj.org ____ The FFTV-IKJ was founded in 1970. The school now has some 700 active students who come from different ethnicities from all across Indonesia and the cinematic works created therefore reflect the various regions the students come from. The IKJ therefore constitutes an educational center for Indonesian arts, even more so at present, when the reawakening theme of Indonesianism and inter-cultural relations is now a very relevant and important subject to be incorporated in its educational system. Films made by the academic ranks of FFTV-IKJ are becoming increasingly diversified and at the same time strongly represent local indigenous values yet without abandoning global universal issues and values. The students are honed and groomed to create different forms and styles of films and television programs and also photographic works in a professional way. Continuous collaboration has been going on with the following educational institutions and film related organizations throughout the world: CILECT (an international association of film schools), La fémis and the French Cultural Center for France, etc. The Philippines University of the Philippines, Film Institute, College of Mass Communication www.upd.edu.ph ____ The University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) is the only establishment in the country to offer a Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking and a Master’s degree in Media Studies, with a major in Film. The UPFI is equipped with modern equipment for production as well as for exhibition. The Institute maintains a special collection of about 1,000 books and more than 1,500 films in various formats in film and video. It is the only Philippine member of the International Association of Film and Television Schools (CILECT). UPFI combines instruction and creative work, research and publication. The Bachelor of Arts in Film and Audiovisual Communication is the country’s first and only film degree program. This four-year course combines film theory and production courses on top of general education including other communication, social sciences and humanities subjects. The Master of Arts in Media Studies is a 39-unit degree program taken by film scholars, practitioners and educators. The MA Program acknowledges the extensive impact of immense popular appeal. The program’s courses operate on the principle of praxis, wherein theory courses are tempered by the possibilities of real-life applications, and production courses draw from and return to philosophical issues in the conception and evaluation of projects. Singapore Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Film and Media Studies www.np.edu.sg/fms ____ Established in 1989, the School of Film & Media Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic is the first tertiary institution in Singapore to offer a full-time filmmaking diploma in Film, Sound & Video (FSV). The threeyear FSV diploma programme was introduced in 1993 and is the most established filmmaking course in Singapore. Students and alumni from this programme have garnered honours and accolades at the Singapore International Film Festival, as well as at some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world such as Cannes, Berlin and Sundance. This year was also a key milestone for the school as three of the alumni were conferred the prestigious Singapore National Arts Council Young Artist Award in the field of Film. The FSV diploma programme provides students with a firm foundation in filmmaking and video production, with hands-on practice in a HD-ready studio environment, opportunities to shoot on 16mm/ 35mm film and high definition formats, as well as access to the latest post-production facilities. In 2008, the School of Film & Media Studies partnered Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts in Orange County, USA to jointly offer diploma. The Puttnam School of Film, Lasalle College of the Arts www.lasalle.edu.sg ____ Founded in 1984, Lasalle College of the Arts is a specialist tertiary institution leading contemporary arts education in fine art, design, media and performing arts in the Asia Pacific. Lasalle offers 26 diploma and degree awards in design, fine arts, film, media arts, fashion, dance, music, theatre, art history, art therapy and arts management in the region. Working closely with industry practitioners, students of the Lasalle Film programme embrace the filmmaking process, from traditional modes to new concepts of expanded cinema, from pre-production to post-production. The course emphasizes artistic and conceptual skills and knowledge, training in storytelling, scriptwriting, directing, producing, cinematography, sound and editing. Thailand Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat University www.tu.ac.th ____ The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat University, was the first higher education institution in Thailand to offer a bachelor degree in journalism, created more than fifty years ago. Their aim is to educate and train students professionally as well as conduct research in journalism and mass communication. They offer courses in newspaper and print media, radio and television, film, advertising, public relations and mass communication management. The school aims to develop students’ critical thinking and ability to evaluate and make decisions for the best of our society. Vietnam École supérieure nationale de Théâtre et de Cinéma phanbichha05@yahoo.com ____ Created in 1995 through the merger of the Ho Chi Minh film school and theatre school, this centre’s audiovisual department trains its students in filmmaking and directing. Young actors train here and film criticism is also taught. Several students from this school have obtained national and international awards. Today, the school is keen to build partnerships with international arts establishments. |
