In a Cambodian village, Vong Poeuv, his wife Yim Om and their seven daughters live their life in time with the paddy fields. Upon the death of the father, Yim Om descends into madness. The eldest daughters have to take control of the family’s fate.

Rithy PANH was born in Phnom Penh in 1964. A survivor of the Khmer Rouge labour camps, he arrived in France in 1980 and graduated from IDHEC in 1985. His work reminds the world of the history of his country. His documentaries, Site II (1985) and S21, la machine de mort khmère rouge (2003), are reflections on the genocide perpetrated by the Pol Pot regime. Acclaimed worldwide, Rithy Panh presented Les Gens de la rizière (1994) at the Cannes Film Festival and Un Soir après la guerre (1998) at Un Certain regard. In the documentary Le Papier ne peut pas envelopper la braise (2007), he addresses the subject of the prostitution of young Cambodian girls. In January 2009, he adapted Marguerite Duras’ novel Un Barrage contre le Pacifique with Isabelle Huppert.

Teak Leaves at the Temples is a poetic encounter between Indonesian musical tradition and three western free jazz musicians in the magnificent Borobudur Temple in the heart of Java.

Garin NUGROHO was born in 1961 in Yogyakarta, in Indonesia. After graduating in 1995 from the Jakarta Institute of Arts, he attracted the attention of international critics with his films Feuilles sur un oreiller (1998) and Serambi (2006), presented in Cannes in the “Un Certain regard†category. His film, Opera Jawa, released in France in 2008, celebrates traditional Indonesian culture. This film won him the Silver Screen Award at the Singapore Film Festival in 2007. His latest film Teak Leaves at the Temples, produced in 2007 and not yet released in France, was presented at the last Toronto International Film Festival.

Duyên has just married Hai. Her best friend, Câm, is devastated by this union: her feelings for Duyên are strong. Driven by her jealously and unable to reveal her morally condemned feelings, Hai pushes Duyên into the arms of his lover.

Chuyen BUI THAC was born in 1968. He studied filmmaking at Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema and in 2001 his film Cuoc Xe Dem was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Rencontres Henri Langlois Festival. In 2007, he obtained the Best Film award at Shanghai International Film Festival with Vivre dans la peur. At the last Venice Film Festival, his film Choi voi won the FIPRESCI prize for best film in the categories Horizons and International Critics’ Week. Chuyen Bui Thac is also an actor and writer and has published several books.
